Why I wake up at 5:15AM
Why would anyone in their right mind want to wake up at 5:15AM?
Well, I don't do it because I need to, I do it because I WANT to!
For the first month of my daughters life, I was breastfeeding EVERY. THREE. HOURS! I never got more than 3 hours of sleep at a time. My body had 1 of 2 choices: adapt or die.
It chose to adapt.
Fast forward to today... My daughter is almost 6 months old. She has been sleeping through the night since she was 6 weeks old, which meant I got to sleep through the night! I was getting 8-10 hours of sleep a night! To some of you, that might seem like something you wish you could do! After a while, I was starting to notice that there wasn't enough hours in the day to do the things I wanted to do, like: read my Bible, enjoy a nice cup of coffee while listening to the birds wake up, journal about the adventures my family and I are having, scrapbook, even have 15 minutes to paint my nails... I had no time during all the cleaning, laundry, keeping my tiny human and kittens alive and... (wait for it) SOCIAL MEDIA!
I noticed that I was spending too much time on my phone to not realize what is going on around me! I am missing precious moments with my husband and daughter! For what? That stupid video of a guy belly flopping into a pool? Or, whether you hear Laurel or Yanny... It makes me sad that a majority of my day is going to my phone and not to my family. I decided that I needed to make a change... and it was the best decision I ever made! (besides saying "I Do" to my hubby) ;)
I WAKE UP AT 5:15 AM!!! My daughter wakes up between 8:30 and 9:00... that gives me 3-4 hours of ME TIME where I can do what Iwant to do! If I want to have any kind of me time, I need to do it before the rest of the world wakes up!

Are you insane?! Probably...
Do you miss social media? Not really, I still go on a few times a day. (Mostly while I'm pooping... gotta love multitasking ;) )
Do you get enough sleep? Yes! I still get 6-8 hours a night! I just go to bed earlier if I need more sleep!
Why get up early? Why not just stay up late instead? Well, think about what you normally do before you go to bed... I usually watch a movie or a show on Netflix, or my husband and I will read a Star Wars book together (because we're adorable). That is time I spend with him, this way, I can continue to spend time with him and have my "me time" in the morning!
How do you do it?! Sorcery! No, not really...
Can you list your 7 tips on how I can discover what the possibilities are at the crack of dawn? Sure!
Put phone to bed.
Get out of bed!
Go to another room.
Do Not Disturb.
The first thing I do before I go to bed is I put my phone to bed... Yes, I made a cute little bed with a pillow and a blanket and I tuck my phone into bed in ANOTHER ROOM!!! I no longer sleep with my phone next to me! This way I am not tempted to scroll through my feed because I can't fall asleep. If I can't fall asleep, I will read a chapter of a book. How do you wake up if your phone is in another room? Don't you use it as you alarm?I use my watch as my alarm now. I am thinking of getting an actual alarm clock, like one with a sunrise simulator and birds or farm animals as the alarm itself, but right now the watch is working for me...
As soon as the alarm goes off, I need to rush to turn it off so my daughter doesn't wake up. (She sleeps in her crib in our bedroom.) If I am committing to getting up at 5:15AM, I actually need to get up and out of bed! If I just shut off the alarm and lay in bed for a couple minutes before I think about getting up, I will definitely fall back asleep. Then my husband might be late for work or I will wake up later with a headache because I got too much sleep and I will have missed a pumping opportunity and that might affect my milk supply... so, there is a whole mess of things that will set my day off to a rocky start if I don't wake up at the time I said I was going to... So be diligent and commit to the schedule you want to keep!
Water! Chug a glass of water before you even think about that hot cup of coffee! Your body has gone 6-8ish hours without hydrating, trust me, you need the water. If you really aren't a fan of drinking water then add a splash of lemon or some cucumber slices... Your body will thank you for giving it a natural jolt before you reached for that wonderful cup of coffee or tea.
Once you have that cup of hot liquid, take it into another room to enjoy. I go to my living room. It is the furthest room from my bedroom which will require 2 flights of stairs to go down if I even think about trying to sneak in a couple more hours. In this room I will do the things I want to get done! Read my Bible, journal, practice Norwegian, and exercise!
I like to do a 20 minute yoga video, this helps my body wake up a little more and I get a couple of wonderful adjustments in my back and hips.
Remember that social media problem I mentioned earlier? Well the solution that has been working for me is to put my phone to Do Not Disturb. I will not look at my phone or receive any messages until 8:00AM. I do, however, have family members on my favorites list that will override the Do Not Disturb if there is ever an emergency and they need to reach me. This means no Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Email... Nothing. I have allowed this time for me and the things I want to do... after 8:00AM I will happily "like" that photo of your cat sharing your bowl of cereal with you... (might have to wait until I poop though...)
I know this may seem like a lot of things to do just to wake up earlier than you want. But let me tell you, I am much more pleasant in the morning after I am fully awake. I challenge you to try this out, just for 2 weeks and see the difference! I have time to think about things I never knew I wanted to think about! I even have time to think about the content for writing out this blog!
Okay Amanda, be honest... Do you wake up at 5:15 EVERYDAY?! AHH! No! Don't be ridiculous! ...I wake up at 6:15AM on Saturdays and Sundays... ;)
